Did you know we can use our hands to measure our spiritual growth? Read more

The human being is equipped with two hands and ten fingers. Each hand has five fingers. Our hands are very important to us. They support us in many tasks during our daily life. But did you know we can use our hands to measure our spiritual growth? That is what this article is about.

Let’s get started with the left hand. The left hand represents the 5 basic attitudes: positive mind, active mind, grateful mind, sincere mind, and humble mind. Put your left hand down on a piece of paper with the palm of the hand facing up and the back of the hand down flat next to the paper and draw the outline of the fingers. On the tip of the thumb write “Positive Mind,” on the tip of the index finger write “Active Mind,” on the tip of the middle finger write “Grateful Mind,” on the tip of the ring finger write “Sincere Mind,” and finally on the tip of the little finger write “Humble Mind.”

A positive mind can be developed by having a dream or goal that creates a strong will and hope.

An active mind never gives up.

A grateful mind is grateful for everything in life, even hardships.

A sincere mind uses 100% of its energy.

A humble mind is able to bring its energy into its lower abdomen and master its thoughts and emotions.

Let’s look at the right hand. The right hand represents the 5 requirements to complete our soul. They are: honesty, diligence, responsibility, an unchanging mind, and good manners. Put your right hand down with the palm of the hand facing up and the back of the hand down flat next to the paper and draw the outline of the fingers. On the tip of the thumb write “Honesty,” on the tip of the index finger write “Diligence,” on the tip of the middle finger write “Responsibility,” on the tip of the ring finger write “An Unchanging Mind,”and finally on the tip of the little finger write “Good Manners.”

Honesty requires us to be truthful every moment, even if telling the truth might not be beneficial to us.

Diligence is accomplished through devotion and sincerity.

Responsibility means taking ownership of our actions, our thoughts and our emotions. It is an excellent tool to control our egos.

An unchanging mind requires us to keep going no matter the obstacles or circumstances.

Good manners means remembering to say “Thank You,” “Please,” “I need your help,” “I am sorry,” and in general being courteous and respectful of other people.

This is how you can measure your own condition by using the fingers on your left and right hand. Let’s try it.

Looking at the thumb on your left hand, on a scale from 1 to 10 mark where you are with respect to a “Positive Mind.” Keep going with each finger on each hand. When you are finished, redraw the length of each finger in accordance with where you marked it on the scale from 1 to 10. In this way you will discover what your strengths are and where you need more work.

Please remember this simple test whenever you are struggling with your spiritual growth. These ten tips are essential to develop a healthy growing soul.

Our gardener shares growing tips and insights. Read more

Here at Mago Garden in the Sedona, Arizona desert, our organic garden is working to produce sustainable living. In this article, we present an insightful interview with the gardener from our organic garden.

Question: When is the best time to prepare the soil for spring planting?

Answer: We always prepare the soil during the winter months so it will be ready to plant crops in the spring. We begin in the winter by adding compost to the soil. We let the compost material work in the soil to decompose organic matter and begin its fermentation process. Also the rain and snow that we get during the winter months helps the fermentation process. In spring the soil is full of nutrients and ready for planting.

Question: What fruits and vegetables have you started to plant in Mago Garden?

Answer: There are many types of fruits and vegetables. Some we can grow year round because of our greenhouses. We grow the leafy salad greens year round. We have already planted tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, and hot pepper. The organic herbs we grow are mint, sage, oregano, thyme, cilantro, and basil. Cilantro and basil are the only herbs that don’t grow by themselves each year. We have to plant them every year. In May we will plant heirloom corn, peanuts, and fennel. This is the second year we have grown peanuts. If we have good success with the crop this year we will probably keep planting them. The heirloom corn that we plant has not been genetically modified or treated. It is less sweet and more chewy and sticky. This year is the second year that we will be planting heirloom corn.

Question: Are any of the fruits and vegetables from the organic garden served in the Mago Dining Hall?

Answer: Yes. All of the leafy salad greens come from the organic garden. The tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, potatoes, corn are served in the dining hall when we have them available. We are not a very big garden, so we can’t always supply the dining hall with fruits and vegetables from our organic garden.

How much does your happiness depend on being in a relationship? Read more

When you are lonely, consider your feelings about being lonely. What form does it take? How long does it stay with you? How do you handle it? Do you start thinking about a soulmate or a spiritual partner to share your life with? How much does your happiness depend on being in a relationship? During these times of loneliness, have you ever considered what your relationship with yourself is?

Do you know the difference between loneliness and solitude?

Solitude is different from loneliness. Loneliness is a kind of sadness. It can easily destroy your confidence while solitude is an opportunity for self-reflection, which creates a connection inside and builds self-confidence.

If you stay in loneliness, however, it can affect your hormones and your emotional health. When these times of loneliness come, please consider changing them into opportunities for solitude. When you turn them into opportunities for solitude, your mind naturally becomes quiet and still and you start to feel full inside and you can listen to your inner voice. When you connect to your inner voice you are connecting with your “True Self.” When we can connect with our True Self we can become centered, happy, creative, and peaceful, and attract to us those individuals that will nurture this within us. In this way we are being true to ourselves and able to develop authentic relationships with others.

There are other kinds of relationships that can support us as well. During the month of May is the time to remember and express our gratitude to those who cared for us and protected and nurtured us when we needed them the most – I am referring to the relationship between a mother and her child. Through that relationship we learned about trust, security, and love. Let us take this time to especially remember the love that our Mother Earth has given us. Let’s show her how much we love her on this Mother’s Day.

Mago’s Curry recipe is so simple anybody can make it. Read more

Curry’s rich flavor enhances the taste of food. It has more than one flavor in it: sweet, bitter, and hot/spicy, which stimulates not only our sense of taste but also other senses in our body. Curry adds flavor to any type of ingredient and stimulates your appetite. It also prevents food from oxygenizing and restricts the growth of bacteria so it makes the food safe and it also helps to prevent cancer.

Many visitors to Mago Garden love Mago’s curry and the recipe is simple so anybody can make it.

Recipe for Vegetable Curry
2 potatoes peeled and cut into cubes
1 medium carrot peeled and cut into cubes
1 medium onion sliced
(You can also add broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, corn, apple to it.)
2/3 cup Korean curry powder (or any type of curry powder but the Korean curry powder is the best for this recipe)
2/3 cup water added to the curry powder
6 cups of water
2 tablespoons corn oil or canola oil

Cut 2 potatoes into two-inch cubes and cut the carrot a little smaller than the potato cubes. Slice the onion.

Warm the pot you are going to use to cook the curry. Pour the oil into the pot and then add the onion, salt, and pepper to taste and stir them together. Do the same thing with the potatoes and the carrot.

Add water to the pot enough to cover the vegetables. Bring to a boil. Boil the vegetables until the potatoes are 4/5 cooked.

Mix the curry and water together and pour the mixture into the pot slowly so the curry can be mixed well with the other ingredients. Be careful not to burn them. Once they are boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes. During this, please stir the vegetables so they don’t burn. Now you can add more vegetables or fruits that you like such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, corn or apple.

Meditation is a way to enter your consciousness. When you are dreaming, you are watching your consciousness. However, because it happened involuntarily, you don’t have any control over your experiences in your dream. Going into your consciousness consciously through meditation is like going into water with scuba gear such as a diving suit, oxygen tank, a mask and fins.

What’s in your mind now? Your life that you are experiencing now is the result of the information in your mind. You perceive things, make a choice and take an action in response to the choice, consciously or unconsciously. And the cumulative results of the choices you have made and actions you have taken are what you are experiencing as your life. This is what it means when we say your life is the result or manifestation of the information in your consciousness. The information that you are storing now in your consciousness will contribute to shaping your future. This is why it is important and helpful to learn to manage the information in our consciousness and to use the functions of our mind. Mediation is an answer.

When you think your life is not exactly proceeding the way you wish, when it feels like there’s something missing in your life, when you feel lost and your life feels disoriented, that is the time you need to take a pause and see what’s really happening in your life, inside and outside. This is what meditation is for.

We have a big concern. The condition of the world and our planet is really a huge concern, and we don’t know the answer yet. But we will find the answer in recovering true human nature, the caring and loving nature of the human heart. We don’t need to create it because it is already there. We have only to go into our mind and find it, bring it up and let it shine through what we say, what we do, through our presence. This is why we see hope in meditation. That is the power of meditation.

It is a solar power project which establishes a renewable power system through the use of solar panels. Currently it is in the feasibility study and financial analysis phase.

Our plan is to start this project within a couple of months and complete it in 6 months. The first phase, when completed, will replace about 60%-70% of our current power usage. By generating additional power, this project will also help improve the power supply to our neighborhood.

While working on developing the technical details of the project, we are also exploring all funding sources to cover the cost, which is estimated to be about $700,000. Your kind interest and support for this project is dearly needed and much appreciated. We will keep you posted on new developments of the project.

Recover Tao within, Heal Your Whole Self, Live Fully

Ultimate healing comes when you get connected to your true nature, Tao. The journey to find Tao within is one of the most meaningful, rewarding, and joyful experiences in your life.

In order to get connected to Tao within, you need to pass through multiple layers of resistance and obstacles such as habits, negative thoughts (doubt), and negative emotions (fear). In many cases, these forms of resistance and obstacles are associated with unaccepted painful emotional experiences. These unaccepted experiences may be the cause of health problems or symptoms in the body. By accepting these experiences, they become integrated into your Whole Self, relieving the symptoms or problems they helped to cause. This integration brings you power, wisdom, peace and healing.

Through this program, you will learn to communicate with your body, to listen to the messages from your body and become deeply connected with your Whole Self. Healing is a natural outcome of this recovery of the inner connection and self-awareness.
